Deep breathAdministration:

software generates a unique set of word or sentence items for each assessment.

.For each item, the software presents a picture and a spoken model for the child to imitate.

. The user controls the software to record the child’s production of each item  (sampling rate of 48 KHz; quantization size of 16 bits) and saves this as a .wav file in the child’s folder.

.There is an “incomplete test” function that allows the user to stop administration of the items and resume at a later time.

.TOCS+ software is used to play the child’s recorded items to a listener for judging and to record the listener’s responses.

.There are two judging options for the Word Measure:
.Open-set where the listener types in the word(s) that he/she hears
.Closed-set where the listener selects a word from a multiple-choice array that matches the word that he/she hears and also judges if the child’s production was clear or distorted.

.The Sentence Measure has an open-set judging option only

.TOCS+ software compares listener responses with the target words in the test items. The number of correct matches (words identified correctly) out of the total number of words, converted to a percentage, serves as the intelligibility score for the Word and Sentence measures.

.The duration of each of the child’s sentence item recordings can be measured using a waveform editor (e.g., WavePad, Audacity, Praat). These durations can be combined with the intelligibility score to calculate speaking rate measures (words per minute and intelligible words per minute) for the TOCS+ Sentence Measure.
